"Page Cannot be Displayed" Cannot access windows update

I have a problem with a laptop on my home network. When
I try and access certain websites I get the "Page cannot
be displayed error". I can get to pages such as google
and even the front page of windows update
(http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com), but when I am
redirected to http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com I get
the error message.

I have been through a complete rebuild and windows update
works fine until I load the last set of critical
patches. Then nothing.

I am running IE 6. I have also tried Firefox and Opera,
same problem. My other laptop can access windows update
fine.

The problem laptop is running Windows XP Professional SP2
(It also did it under SP1a).

Any suggestions. I am at my wits end.

check your hosts file ...those urls maybe blocked

Thanks for the reply Haggis.

I've tried all of the regular checks (hosts file, network
settings, active x controls etc.) I'm sure it has
something to do with the patches loaded by windows update.
