Page breaks in Microsoft Word 2000

I am writing a document in Word 2000 and for some reason the margins/page
breaks are acting up. Even though all of the text is in the same font and
size and all margins are set universally throughout the document, sometimes I
get 23 lines per page and sometimes I get 24. The only way to correct this
is to force a page break which for some reason miraculously moves the
orphaned line back to it's correct page. The only issue is that I'm forcing
a page break in mid sentence and I can't do this while still editing my paper
because then I have to go back and move the page break anytime I change any
words in the document. What is going on? Is this some crazy glitch or do I
have something set that I don't even know about?

This is probably attributable to widow & orphan control which is part of the
paragraph formatting. Turn it off if you don't need it.

Great article Suzanne! I have been fighting with this for a long time, good
to know I wasn't really doing anything wrong, it can only be done through
hard work.

That was extremely helpful. Like the other guy said, it's nice to hear that
my attempts to force this to work through mechanical movements was actually
the correct way to do it. Almost makes me want to go back to the simpler
days of notepad.
