Peter

I have just downloaded the Pack2 update and don't know how to disable the
Anti-virus.

I have McAfee and don't need MS's.

Can you help?

Thanks

Hello Tom

But there is a security centre with 3 items:

Firewall (which hopefully I disabled as I have Kerio)
Automatic updating
Virus protection

So what is this virus protection business if it is not an anti virus?

Thanks

It's simply to monitor whether you actually have an antivirus program
installed.

Control Panel/double click Security Center icon/here you can set control
options when you click on "Recommendations" under "Firewall", "Automatic
Updates", and "Virus Protection". For instrance, if you have both a third
party Firewall and Ant-Virus (as I do), you need to turn off the Windows
Firewall and check mark that you have a separate Firewall which you will
self-monitor; then check mark the similar setting in "Virus Protection" to
turn off the nag screen {Windows does not offer an integrated Anti-Virus}.

Microsoft forgot to include an essential file in the SP2 update,
"The Top 20 Questions about the SP2 you just installed, Answered!"
This has caused more grief and confusion than was ever necessary.
Thousands, maybe millions of people were inconvenienced by this.

Now, your question, MS doesn't have any antivirus software.
But in SP2 they added a new feature that yells "antivirus running?"
And all the antivirus software written before MS did this has no
clue what someone asking that means, so they just ignore it.
MS on the other hand assumes that if it doesn't get an answer
then no antivirus software must be out there so it yells at you.

After a little while all the antivirus folks will have to change
their software so they understand and answer the question.

Your options: you can turn off the MS checking for this and do
your own checks, as you always have (you can do that by setting
a couple of the options in the MS security center telling it to
not warn you about this). Or you can get a newer version of your
antivirus software that knows how to answer the MS question, that
should be available soon, or maybe even now.

I hope this helps

It is just a means of telling you that you *have* got an AV installed
and that it is reporting it is up to date. That depends on the AV
actually making the report - I am not sure if McAfee does so yet
