P4PE with 800MHz FSB

Hello

ASUS's guide for upgrading P4PE to 800MHz FSB says "Apply only one
DIMM". Does anyone know what is the reason for this limitation? What's
going to happen if I install more than one DIMM?

As near as I can tell, the processor clock to memory clock ratios only
allow the memory to be run faster than the processor on the P4PE. That
means that when the processor FSB is 800MHz, the memory rate is DDR400,
and the memory cannot be slowed down. If you look at a number of other
Asus single channel motherboards, they are limited to one double sided
DDR400 rate DIMM. If you attempt to install more than one double sided
DIMM, then you will experience memory errors that cannot be fixed by
changing the memory timings (i.e. the 2-3-3-7 thing). So, the limit is
a memory stability limit. If you have the money, you could experiment
with trying more memory, but there are no guarantees that it will work
stable. The thing is, the overclocking forums are not too much help
in terms of providing data, because overclockers generally only use
one DIMM, so it is hard to say what the odds are that multiple DIMMs
are going to work for you. To find the best DIMMs for this experiment,
you can examine the Asus dual channel board qualified memory lists -
the DIMMs rated as being able to use four sticks in a dual channel
board are the ones most likely to work two at a time in the P4PE.
There are also a couple of posts in abxzone.com, on using four
name brand DIMMs in 875/865 boards, so you could look in those forums
for the part numbers of the "good" DIMMs. But this is a gamble that
only rich people can afford (considering the prices of PC3200+ DIMMs).

Good luck and tell us if it works for you,
Paul
