P4PE upgrade

Hi All,

I currently have a P4PE with 2.4ghz and 1GB of 333 memory. I'm wondering if
there is a simple way to just upgrade the CPU without having to upgrade the
mb or memory. I'm certainly no expert in this and I'm a little lost as to
prescott vs northwhatever and I'm confused as to what the impact will be if
I put an 800MHZ fsb cpu in without upgrading the memory. My understanding
is that it may automatically jump to 800MHZ (with the bios upgrade) and then
the memory won't work.

Anyway is this a waste of time or can I spend some money to shorten my video
processing times.

Thanks for any help.

You could upgrade but, IIRC, if you go with a 800fsb chip, you will only be
able to have single channel memory. I am basically running the same system
in my other case (1.8 at 2.4 and 1gb 333) and after doing the research, I
ended up with the P4C800-E Dlx and a Northwood 2.6 at 3.4 and 1gb 533 mem.
I am going to use the P4PE as my HTPC and set it up mainly for DVR. I think
that the max you will be able to get out of a cpu upgrade without going to
the 800 bus is 3.0 and with a little o/c you are close to that already.

you need ddr400 and you can only use 1 stick...but I highly recommend
you find a good deal on fast 533mhz proc. I had problems when running
the board with 800mhz fsb and 1 stick of ddr400. I went back to the
533mhz proc and bought another board for the 800mhz fsb proc...

Quickest upgrade is simply set the clock speed to 167 and get an
immediate 3.006 processor. Running for months and works bulletproof.
This is a Northwood. Also made the same change to 2,4 Prescott in P4P2-X
and it works rock solid as well. In both cases, Asus utility reports 3.2
as max. speed for either of these processors. Put ypur money into a
video card or??? Good luck

The P4PE is really not designed with substantial upgrades beyond what you
already have in mind. I own the same board with the same RAM complement. I
finally invested in an older P4 3.06 GHz 533 FSB w/HyperThreading, to take
me beyond the 2.53 Ghz P4 I had. That bought me a 20% improvement in
processing speed.
If you install the latest P4PE BIOS it will allow you to use the older 800
MHz FSB p4's, BUT you can ONLY use ONE stick of PC3200 RAM.
