P4P800 Onboard LAN is terrible slow

P

Peter Diedrich

With latest BIOS for the ASUS P4P800 motherboard and latest drivers
for its Intel Gigabit LAN adapter sometimes(!) I get _very_ low
bandwidth over the LAN (just a a few bytes per second).

If I pull the cable and reconnect, sometimes it is fine. Sometimes
not.

However I can get it stable to work when I select "Media Type" to
10MBit in the Win XP advanced LAN adapter settings.

Cables and network is all fine. Cross-checked with two other PCs.

Any clue what is going on here?

Peter.

Don't know, but my P4P800 has a 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940)

Peter,

Seems curious, and abnormal...

.... I'll have - as well as Victor - the same 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940) driver
ver. 1.0.0.46... working 100 Mb/s with my other PIII (LAN Card Realtek
RTL8139(A)).

ST anti-viral software and/or firwall software such as ZoneAlarm might
slowdown your connexion, even XP firwall could make some trouble.

Hi Peter,

When you do set the Media Type to 'Auto' it means that:
- If a drop appears in the network, then
- A resynchronization to-get-the-correct-speed takes place
-> That takes seconds and appears to the user as a slowing down network.

If there are indeed network drops everynow and then (not your problem), the
advice is not to the use the 'Auto' setting but just the max speed your
network is able to handle.
-> That's what you did and it helps.

Regards,

Bert

Well, but... actually my Router can do 100MBit and did well with my
other PC at 100MBit.

Any further help? I googled for it and found a few with similar
problems but no solution...

Peter.

Just wait for the P4P800-ES. They downgraded the lan from 3com to
"Marvel" so fat cats at the top can make more money. Upon first load
the driver will jack up the OS (w2k) and you have to go into safe mode
and un-install the driver.

Its normal to see people with probs on this group, they are simply
trying to find solutions. I for one enjoy my p4p800dlx and do not have
any problems with it. I do seek advise from this group in an attempt
to get superior performance for my money, for example overclocking.

p4p800 & dlx models are good boards. For the other derivatives of
p4p800 I cannot say.

Your prob could be related to the PSU or other cards ie video. Hard to
say without testing. For testing purposes I download the "offline
installer prog" for netscape7.1 from netscape.com. The download speed
for my system is 352KB/sec with the p4p800dlx. Downloads from Netscape
are always fast, try it & post your speeds.
