on P4P800 SE where is the modem port ---is there a serial -- see list below

I ordered a P4P800 SE i865PE chipset MB for a system I'm going to build for
my sister. I noticed in the list of Ports these items ---- 2xPS/2, 1xLPT,
1xCOM, RCA SPDIF OUT, 8xUSB2.0(Rear4), 1xLan, Audio Ports. It has an
onboard Lan and a 1x ASUS Wi-Fi; also, it has 5 PCI slots. The manual is a
real pain to find and download from ASUS.

I don't notice a serial port for a modem. I wanted to get her an US
Robotics External V.92 modem like I use ( my father also uses one). Cable
is still too expensive in our community. What kind of modem can I use, or
is there really a serial port on this MB that is not listed. It should be a
week before I get it. The modem is the only part I've not got yet; I hate
internal ones. Thanks

Sincerely -- Randy

Doesn't the "1XCOM" mean "1 serial port included"?

The COM port is a 15 pin serial port.

Michael Ryder says the 1xCOM is a serial port with 15 pins. I see the US
Robotics 56k External Fax modem has a 25 serial pin setup, and it needs a 25
serial pin cable which is not included when you buy it from Newegg. Are you
sure there are no 25 pin ports on this board? Are there any modems which
use 15 pin serial ports; I've never heard of any? What good would a 15 pin
serial port be? Thank you all!!!!

PC's have'nt had 25 pin COM ports as standard since about 1994.

No data pins are lost in reducing the pin count - with 25 pins, every second
pin is a ground wire.

Avoid WinModems (software based), or USB!!!

Both the above modem types are highly reliant on their drivers and the OS
version aimed at.

I made a mistake in the number of pins, it is actually 9 pins. Modem
cables are easy to get with the 9 pin connector on one end and 25 pins
on the other. I use one with my US Robotics modem

The best thing to do, is download the PDF user manual for the board.
That gives you a chance to see what parts come with the motherboard
(the box contents are listed near the front of the manual), you can
read up on all the ports and internal connectors included, and you
can see the BIOS screens. Checking the BIOS screens is necessary,
to see if the adjustments you want, like Vcore, Vdimm, manual memory
timings, CPU clock, memory clock, and so on, are available. (Asus
microATX boards are usually weak in that regard.)

On page 45:

"Serial connector. This 9-pin COM1 port is for serial devices."

On page 50:

"Serial Port 2 connector (10-1 pin COM2)
This connector accomodates a second serial port using a serial
port bracket. Connect the bracket cable to this connector then
install the bracket into a slot opening at the back of the
system chassis." (Note: Bracket is not included!)

I think you need a 9 pin to 25 pin cable. 25 pin end is male.
