P4P800 and DDR speed limit

Hello

I have just built a computer for a friend,
using a Celeron 2.0 GHz with 400 MHz FSB
and 256 MB of DDR400 memory.

However, during the boot it displays the
DDR speed as 266 MHz, and going into the
BIOS setup for DDR speed it displays only
"266" and "Auto".

Is this because of the Celeron processor
or maybe because the memory is not on the
ASUS recommended list ?

Thanks for any reply,

Rubens

Check the manual. There is a table that relates
the nominal FSB of your processor, to the memory
speeds that will be offered. A FSB400 processor
only offers DDR266 memory speed. You can change
this by overclocking if you want (i.e. raise the
FSB and the memory clock is raised by the same
proportion, although the BIOS readout doesn't
reflect the actual memory clock rate like it
should).

If you look here, you can see how far a 2.0/400
can be pushed. I guess it depends on how you
feel about overclocking:

Hi Paul

Thanks for your reply. I really didn´t know that,
because this is the first time I build a non-P3
computer and also I have paid not enough attention
to that table.

Best wishes,
