P4C800ED Single SATA and W2k

Hello:

ASUS, Western, and Microsoft sites have them as compatible, but I am having
the worst time installing Win 2000 Pro with this configuration.
I've ran setup from DVD and from Floppy, pressed F6 when asked and loaded
the correct Intel's ICHR5 drivers (latest from ASUS), multiple times. None
worked, setup loads completely, and hangs at "Setup is starting windows
2000"

I did a quick search on Microsoft KB and this articles came up:
KB#234772 Windows 2000 hangs at "Setup is Starting Windows 2000" message

You can read it here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;234772
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;216406

this link caught my attention but I do not know if on this mobo P4C800E
Deluxe that would apply
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;224826

This is my system
ASUS P4C800E Deluxe BIOS Ver-1015
INTEL P4-3.2Ghz
Brandless RAM IGhz (I-know) I have tried with one 250Mb from Dell.
XFX Nvidia 5600 250Mb
IOMEGA SuperDVD
WD2500JD SATA

and this is my procedure to install

Load default settings in bios= yes
disable Promise controller
Hyperthread On and Off
Onboard IDE Operate Mode = Enhanced Mode
Enhanced Mode Support On = S-ATA
Configure SATA as Raid = No

My boot order
1) Floppy
2) CDROM/DVD
3) 3rd master IDE hard disk

=Intel test SATA-1 and SATA-2 ports=

Have SATA drivers on floppy (tried with those on ASUS-CDROM and also freshly
downloaded from Intel and ASUS )
W2K-cd in the CD-ROM
Boot system with just the SATA disk on Sata 1 and later on Sata 2
W2K-setup starts.
Press F6
Put in floppy when asked, press S
Select SATA driver Intel ICH5.
Continue W2K setup. --- It hangs

Intel(R) 82801ER SATA RAID Controller floppy contents:
iaStor.inf
iaStor.sys
iaStor.cat
Txtsetup.oem

W2K hangs after loading all files from CD-ROM.

I leaning towards incompatability between os and bios. Or this board cant do
a single sata.
If I had another type of drive I could have install win98 or NT4.0, but I do
nt.

Any input is welcomed.

thank you

Single SATA != RAID

You don't need to insert a floppy with drivers during install if you don't
use RAID.

I have 1 SATA drive with my P4C800-E Deluxe and I use WinXP. I just let it
install normally and after it has completed, I install the Intel chipset inf
drivers.

Disclaimer: You dont need to load drivers during the install, if you are
not using RAID, *AND* your version of XP is SP1a and supports SATA drive
~ natively now.

Your CD will say Version 2002 or something to those regards.

Yes, but he is using Win2K :) I dont believe unless he has a SP4
(perhaps SP3) slipstream Win2K Professional, that he will get native
SATA support, so he still needs drivers, just not the RAID ones.

As stated in a seperate branch of this thread, unless you are using
RAID, you do not need RAID drivers, just the SATA drivers.

Well, every time *I* have run into this problem with almost all systems,
it was HD or Memory related. Given that you state here:

| This is my system
| ASUS P4C800E Deluxe BIOS Ver-1015
| INTEL P4-3.2Ghz
| Brandless RAM IGhz (I-know) I have tried with one 250Mb from Dell.

Brandless, eep, generic ram, how many sticks, in what configuration, and
what speed? This board is a high quality board, and as such is going to
want high quality memory, and certain densities.

| XFX Nvidia 5600 250Mb
| IOMEGA SuperDVD
| WD2500JD SATA

BUT! Then you mention this.

Western Digital drives can be tricky, use the black IDE cable they give
you, and take off the jumper, or move to Cable select (I've heard things
about WD and jumperless mode)

| I leaning towards incompatability between os and bios. Or this board
cant do
| a single sata.

1. This board can and has run Win2K SP3 on my machine, I installed from
my slipstreamed CD so I had native SATA support, but I found the board
with hyperthreading enabled to not respond as well as I hoped, and Intel
suggests turning it off in Win2k, so I decided, lets just turn off Win2K
and get XP Pro.

Anyways, this drive *can* do a single SATA drive configuration, it just
needs to be setup right, double check the few things I mentioned (the
jumper on the damn hard drive keeps jumping at me for some reason) and
get back to us and let us know how it stands.

Thank you for your replies.

The RAM I am using is detected by Bios, which I know does not mean Win 2K
will. The RAM is 1GB ECC Module
System Memory, 1-3318DDEC . The vendor offered to send replacements but I
hold it off until I determine with your help if this is
related to the size of RAM.

The drivers are needed: the board ships with a cd-rom that includes
Promise/378ata and Promise/378raid, these I am not using for the
sake of simplicity; I have already tried with Promise and did not worked
either, so I kept on with Intel's ICHR5.

Downloaded from ASUS infinst_autol.exe and extracted to c:/Temp where then I
found a Makedisk.exe that built the floppy with the
files already mentioned in past post. I did same with Intel's site
iaar353_enu.exe

Eskil Laurintsen says:
You don't need to insert a floppy with drivers during install if you don't
use RAID.

Intel agrees with you Eskil, Microsoft disagrees:

As per Intel the
Do You Need the Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition?
It is a requirement in order for Intel® RAID Technology to work properly.
"It is not a requirement for
stand-alone Serial ATA hard drive(s) to work properly (e.g. not configured
for RAID)".

I have tried that, and windows 2000 still hangs at Setup is Starting
Windows.

But them Microsoft say you do need IAA because in the W2K CD-Rom the drivers
for SATA are not present, to use F6 to load when asked
by setup.

Then I came accros this article ==
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;220845 "If Setup
detects a mass storage
device that causes Setup to stop responding (hang), you should remove the
reference to that controller from the [Scsi.load] and
[SCSI] sections of the Txtsetup.sif file. To disable a line in the file,
place a semicolon (;) in front of the line." == I placed a
semicolon (;) in front of each line in [Scsi.load] and [SCSI] sections and
it hangs the same.

Intel:
"In order to install the Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition, it is
required that the system
BIOS includes the Intel® RAID Option ROM."

I am not using that option since it is not RAID I am setting up: it seems a
catch 22.

There are not many people installing W2K on this board; I have checked
different forums and NG and I ve seen a couple of posts only.

It seems ASUS and Intel have provided a driver that is only good for RAID.
Where do I get the correct driver?

The older I get the more I think I forget more items in a day than I
take in, one day I'll be empty I think :)

Yeah, and the only reason I know SP3 will support SATA is because I
installed Win2k on my board before XP, and because I slipstreamed it,
and because my WinXP was sp1a, I never had to deal with any of the
floppy/drivers issue as both versions of the OS I had supported it.

Thank you for your responses.

As per Western
"The drives ship in the default position with the shunt on pins 1-2
(disabled). Placing the shunt on pins 3-4 (enabled), designates that the
drive will power-up in standby mode. For most users the default position
should be used."

It should be on the CD.

I can't find any appropriate drivers on ASUS' website, so if you can't find
any drivers on the CD you should slipstream service pack 4 onto an image of
your Win2k CD and then burn it. When you install from the new Win2k+SP4 CD,
you should not have to insert any floppies.

Philip you were right. Thank you for mentioning slipstreaming to me.

I am runnig the board with sp3 and win2k, after all it was not the memory,
nor the hdd. The hard it is not recognized as 250 only 137. Is that a
limitation of W2K2000SP3? Do you know how to extend it?

I had a harder time making the cd bootable, the instructions
were right and I followed them correctly but I would get missing ntldr.
Looking for a solution I came across a page where it is mentioned as an
error in Nero, fixable in a key in the register.

I quote:

[Q] I've burned a bootable NT4/W2K/XP CDRom using Nero. When booting I can
get the message "BOOT: Couldn't find NTLDR"

[A] You need to disable ISO9660 file versions, in Nero you need to do a
registry setting:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ahead\Nero - Burning
Rom\General\AddISOFileVersion
Set the value to 0 (zero).
Newer version of Nero have an option in the "ISO" page, Relax ISO
Restictions, Enable "Do not add ';1' ISO file version extensions".

thanks a lot

I think the issue here is that originally Windows 2000 was only
capable of addressing 137mb of contiguous disk, using a 28-bit Logical
Block Addressing (LBA) scheme. Sp3 'resolves' that problem as a
capability, but you still have to do a registry hack to enable it <G>.
In order to enable 48-bit LBA (more than enough address space to keep
track of any disk you can currently throw at Win2K) in a Win2K OS:

1. make sure you have SP3 (or greater).
2. have a BIOS version capable of supporting 48-bit LBA.
3. have a hard disk with a capacity greater than 137GB (duh...).
4. add or change the EnableBigLba registry value to 1 within
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters

for step by step instructions, goto:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305098

It worked for me. Hope that helps.
