P4C800-E Deluxe + PCI VGA...

Hi,
previously I had problems with my old Number9 - S3 Vision 968 PCI
graphics card.
It was concluded that it was too old to work with my ASUS P4C800-E
Deluxe.
Ok, I asked a frien if I could borrow his not-that-old graphic card
until my new All-In-Wonder card arrives.
So, I plugged his S3 Virge 325 PCI card into the mb.
My computer started up - great! (it did not boot with the other
card...).
However, after I change the screen resolution to anything else than
640*480 and 16 color my computer won't boot :-(

Now, is this due to the PCI card or could the ASUS mb/drivers not
working ok?
I got a feeling that the ASUS mb is a bit shakey - I think it should
either accept my PCI card and allow display settings like 256 colors
and/or 800*640 (at least), or either not accept the card at all.
Hmm...

/Tommy

Ouch, you went from old school, to remedial school.

Given that even a generic AGP TNT2 can be had most places for 20 bucks
or less, I seriously suggest you buy a card made sometime this decade.

And the resolution is variable, some of those shipped with 2mb some with
4mb, etc, the resolution you can get is related to the amount of memory.

Your sticking solid rubber tires on a porsche, you are going to be
dissapointed in the board, and it isnt the boards fault.

Hey, at least you got SOME graphics :) heheh

Have you ever driven *any* good sports car with crap tyres on? It is the
most digusting experience ever. The driver is of the mind "I have a sports
car therefor I must drive fast", the car has a mind of (if a car can have a
mind) "I know how to go around corners really well so I won't object to
these thrusts", but the tyres say "Nope, sod off, your not going anywhere
where you want". In the mean time, the driver who knows no better points the
car and stabs at accelerator, brakes, and jerks the steering wheel to
compensate the gross lack of road holding all the while grinning and
exclaiming about the superior road holding while the body of the vehicle
pitches madly from one extreme to the other. Oh yes and the tyres scream in
delight...

I do not recommend this at all.

Good tyres make a huge difference - when they are correctly fitted &
inflated.

If you are implying that something may be wrong with ***your*** Asus MB then
wait till you get the AIW card before jumping to conclusions. Otherwise,
check/change the video related default settings in the BIOS. Remeber to set
them back when you do get the AIW.

Beg to differ but the Asus P4C800E-Deluxe motherboard is one
of the best around today...a superb performer when equipped
properly. And what makes you think that the ATI card with the
S3 Virge chipset is any newer than the S3-968 video card. Or
better? In fact, the S3 Virge chipset (S3-768) is older and
less capable than the S3-968 with the former using DRAM while
the latter, VRAM. What the P4C800E-Deluxe really needs on is
a current model 4X/8X AGP video card with 128/256 MB of RAM.

Ok, guess I'll have to wait. You're right I should not
blame the mb. Maybe I can ask another friend of mine
if I can borrow his not-very-old-at-all PCI card?
Just kidding ;-)

Yeah - I can play Minesweeper! Even tried some Pinball but
it did not have the right look and feel ;-)

Wow... your current train of thought is "shakey" and not the motherboard. I
would advise you to wait till you get your new video card to arrive before
placing any blame on the motherboard. Don't forget that it's the software
drivers along with the video card's memory and RAMDAC that dictate what
color depth and resolution that "any" version of Windows will run at.

BTW, that motherboard rocks.

It's better with crappy tires than with no tires...

If both those PCI cards are built to the PCI spec used by the mainboard they
should work fine. If they don't then they are either damaged, or the
mainboard is damaged.

Personally I wouldn't worry too much until the new video card arrived
though.

But you are all forgetting... This mainboard HAS PCI slots. They should work
like PCI slots, so a PCI video card should work... even if only at 640x480
or 800x600.
