P2P Chat Recommendation for win2mac?

I would like to send a deaf friend, who uses a mac (probably system X or
later) a chat program that can do peer to peer chat with my windows
machine.

Initially, I thought ICQ chat would be best until I went to the ICQ
homepage, owned I guess now by AOL. Appeared to me AOL had made it
difficult to find and download a free or lite version, and discover whether
there were corresponding free/lite version for the mac. Shades of Real
Audio!

Any recommendation for reasonable chat software, probably peer to peer,
that will work between windows and mac (windows OS can be anything from
95 to 2000, and I suspect her mac is system X).
