p2b rev 1.02 upgrade (solotek slocket)

I've got the ancient rev 1.02 vanilla p2b running BIOS 1012. I tried
to upgrade this with a 900MHz coppermine in a solotek SL02A (no + or
++) slocket. I set the voltage to 1.80 (should be close enough for
coppermine), but the system does not even try to boot. I cannot even
get to the BIOS.

Any clue as to what the problem may be? I did make sure the slocket
was fully seated and the coppermine was from a working system.

I'd recommend a BIOS update - I don't recall if 1012 supported
Coppermines, but 1013 and later definitely does.

Does the CPU fan spin?

If no, most likely the P2B does not think it can supply the voltage
requested by the CPU - but it *can* supply 1.8v, so recheck the voltage
jumpers.

If yes, the problem could be slot adapter incompatibility, BIOS
incompatibility (unless you've upgraded to 1013), or adapter seating -
with some adapters "fully seated" doesn't work, but withdrawing the
adapter 1mm or so does.

The SL-02A isn't fcpga compliant. Even the SL-02A+ is on the Intel
non-compliant list:

The SL-02A++ would have been ok:

You have to be careful with slocket model numbers as well.
There are several similar slockets from another manufacturer
and the numbering of the VID bits on the VID jumpers is
different between the different models of slocket. Be very careful
to verify the documentation you are using, is actually intended
for the slocket you own. I would use an ohmmeter, and trace from
the switch or jumper, to pins on the back of the S370 socket, to
make sure the labelling of the VID setting is as stated in the
user manual for the slocket. It helps if the slocket has labels
printed right on it, next to the VID switches, as the person who
designed the product is the most likely to get the labels correct.

Thanks for this gem, who would make a slocket that was non compliant?!
(Follow up Q: who would buy one, A: me, lol).

To answer the other questions, yes the CPU fan spins, and I believe
1012 does support coppermine. I will look for a compliant slocket
(with the voltage jumpers).

Anyone who designed a slocket for PPGA only, probably before Intel
released the FCPGA specification. Slockets that support both have a CPU
selection jumper.

Someone who is not aware that all S370 processors physically fit in a
370 pin socket, but that does not guarantee they'll work. Intel made at
least 3 types of S370 processors with different pinouts, AMD and Cyrix
also used the S370 form factor.

BIOS is probably OK. I got a P2B-D in for modification today with BIOS
1012B, and it booted a pair of Tualatin P3-S processors - surprised me!

Slot-T is readily available and recommended for use on the P2B series.

there was a version of the soundblaster drivers that caused problems,
but those drivers are like pre 2000 ;)

Completely irrelevant. The system does not POST, therefore does not load
any drivers.

I got the slot-t today and it worked no problem. Tx much for your help!
