overtype spaces that are underlined with text

In MS Word, I created a document with spaces are underlined.
How do I overtype spaces that are underlined with text that I want underlined?
I am in OVR mode.

If you are typing in underscores to underline this would be a problem. If
you are selecting the Underline button and then typing spaces or a tab, when
you click there to type in your text, it should automatically pick up the
Underline formatting. Just make sure that the Underline button is turned on.
