overbar characters, as in the symbol for 'mean'

how can an character with an overbar be created. i'm looking for symbols for
the 'mean' of a letter character, such as the mean of 'D', or D-overbar.
 
I would just use Microsoft Equation Editor if I were you. Works like a charm
for me.
