Outlook2007/Win XP Continuous Password Prompt

Operating system is Win XP SP2, tried to upgrade from Outlook 2003 to Outlook
2007 but password not saved during setup. LogIn box pops up asking for
password and when entered email is received so password was accepted but not
saved. LogIn box keeps popping up every minute or so interupting work
driving me nuts. Using POP3 Yahoo premium mail and can sign-in Yahoo with no
problems so do not think problem is there.

Had another machine with clean install of Win XP SP2 used for storage that I
loaded Outlook 2007 onto and it that runs like it should - password is saved.

Reviewed discussion groups, forums, and everything I can find but to no
avail. I did turn on logging and noticed that password being used to
validate againstis only 5 characters (*****) while it is really 6.

You should not look at the number of characters as the ***'s are ment to hide
the acctual password in numbers and letters and the amount of characters.

So forward to the acctual issue here, You might concider a cleanboot(how-to
do a cleanboot are to be found on support.microsoft.com/kb.) to ensure it's
not your 3rd part firewall or antivirus bugging the system.

The other part that is also likely, is that the profile you are using are
corrupted and that happend when you did the upgrade.

Start outlook in /safe from "start - > run -> outlook.exe /safe"
This will also ensure that no 3rd part add'ons will interfere with outlook.

If this works you know it is not office it self og outlook that has failed.
If this doesn't work you know there is some corrupt file og reg key for
office.

But I would put my bet on the outlook profile if you haven't already made a
new one.
how-to make a new outlook profile you can also find on MS' KB archive via
support.microsoft.com/kb

Thank you for your response. I learned some new troubleshooting techniques
that I had not used before. I cleaned out all my unused programs, cleaned
registry, and uninstalled Office 2007. Cleaned system again and reinstalled.

Now I do not have the continous pop-up and password is being saved but still
have pop-for original sign in and sending of email. Much better than where I
was at but would still like to solve. This machine has entries for office
8.0 to 12.0 in the registry so looking into that. Thanks again.

I've been working on solving this for a few days and have found a
solution for my environment.

The problems was with the access of the autodiscovery service.
Specifically, if the client machine is
configured to use a proxy server then the autodiscovery fails which
leads to the multiple password
challenges.

The solution for me was to exclude the autodiscovery domain (https://
*ExhangeMachineName*) from the list
of sites checked by the proxy server. I already had the "bypass local
addresses" box checked but for
whatever reason that was not enough. Once I explicitly excluded the
exchange machine from the sites that went
through the proxy server the repeated password prompts went away.

Good luck.

Thanks for all your asisstance. I also was having problems installing
another program so I bit the bullet started from scratch which was the final
solution. Everything is running fine with no issues.
