outlook opens with error messages able not being able to open ad-ins for
McAfee - I don't us McAfee - it's not even in my programs on the control
panel to add and delete programs.

In order for a McAfee addin to be shown it must have been installed at some
time with McAfee
Perhaps McAfee was prinstalled by the PC maker
Check Add/Remove dialogue

No - The problem is in Outlook. For some reason it is trying to connect to
McAfee, which is not on my computer. I did use the removal tool - but it
just me files don't exist, which I know from Outlook telling me that.

I find nothing at all in Outlook to explain why it's looking for McAfee.

With Outlook closed, delete extend.dat. That file can be found in a hidden
folder whose path on Windows XP is %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook and on Windows Vista is
%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Outlook
