Outlook (XP) will not run, needs Outlook express?

Upgrade from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate. Outlook will not run. The error
message says that it needs Outlook express which does not run under Vista.
The rest of Office XP seems to run OK. Anyone else have this problem or know
of a fix.
TIA

Outlook or Outlook Express? There is a difference. OE has been replaced
by Windows Mail.

Hi, Tony.

Some confusingly-similar names may be confusing you. ;^{

As you probably know, in spite of the very similar names, Outlook (OL 2000,
OL XP, OL 2003, OL 2007, etc.) is NOT the same or even closely related to
Outlook Express. Vista does not run OE, but all versions of Vista include
Windows Mail, which is a rewritten version of OE6.

No version of Office or Outlook ever came as a part of Windows, although
many PC vendors (Dell, for example) bundled Office with many of their
computers. My uncle bought only 2 computers in his life; they both were
Dells and both came with the Works Suite, so he thought that all computers
came with MS Word.

I've been running Vista, including the beta, for a year and a half now.
Never had any problems running Office 2003 or 2007, including Outlook. I
much prefer OE/WM, so I haven't run Outlook much, but it works fine for me
in Vista.

Which version of Outlook do you have? What specific problems are you having
with Vista and Outlook? What are you doing that triggers the "needs OE"
error message?

Thanks. The version of Outlook along with other programmes in the suite is
"Office XP", I think this is 2002. I do not use Outlook Express for email I
used Turnpike. This will now not run under Vista so now I'm using Firefox
Thunderbird. I used Outlook for a diary/calendar and to sync with my iPAQ.
Using Sync Center or trying to run Outlook on its own gives the same
message,quote,
"Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express
4.01 or greater. You can install Outlook Express by running IE5Setup.exe from
the IE5 folder located on your CD or throughthe Windows Update website."
I've tried but with no sucess. I have a feeling that I'm on a loser here. I
really don't need Office 2007 as Word XP and Excel XP run fine under Vista
(so far). But I cannot be the only person with this problem, can I?

Outlook does not require outlook express to be installed. Unless you
are trying to use Outlook to view newsgroups. Then Outlook does use
OE for the newsgroups as it has no built in newsreader capability. For
just using Outlook for mail though, you do not need OE installed.

If you are trying to use Outlook for newsgroup access then you wont be
able to do so in Vista.

Outlook will not run at all, not for any use. I've just done a complete
Office XP Pro uninstall and a re-install. Still the same error message. This
is not a stand alone version of Outlook. I've tried to install Outlook
Express from other sources but I get a not compatible with this version of
windows error message. I conclude that this version of Outlook does need
Outlook Express and it cannot be installed in Vista so I'm stuffed. Ho hum!

Here's a link concerning Vista and Outlook 2000.

This does not compute! Outlook has never required Outlook Express to be
installed. And OE4 and IE5 predate Office XP by several years, as I recall.
It sounds like you are using some VERY outdated software.

You might have better luck in an Outlook newsgroup, such as:
