OUTLOOK XP to OUTLOOK 2003 - PST ISSUE

M

Monicamo

I have saved all my Outlook XP email into a PST folder. I have now tried to
import the PST into my Outlook 2003 and my new Outlook crashes. I have read
in the forums that the XP and 2003 PST formats are not compatible.

Is there any way I can import my XP PST into my Outlook 2003? A friend was
able to open my PST file in 2007 so the pst file is NOT corrupted. It seems
to be just a compatibility issue.

Thank you very much,

Monica

no, its not incompatible with outlook 2003 - if you create a unicode pst in
outlook 2003, outlook 2002 won't be able to use it.

Can you open the pst using file, open outlook data file? if so, drag the
items from that pst to the new one.

I think it is very surprising that MS has developed a PST format that it is
totally incompatible with previous versions. I would find it normal that a
2003 PST cannot be opened in XP but not the other way around, that is, that a
lower version cannot be opened in a higher version. In any case I think they
have corrected the compatibility issue in 2007.

As I cannot opened the PST file, I dont have access to all my work files,
templates, etc. So I may just need to install both XP and 2003 so that I can
access my data. This is far from ideal. Or I may just stick to XP and forget
about 2003.

You got it wrong. Outlook 2003 can open any type of PST file, including
those from previous versions.

I would find it normal that a 2003 PST cannot be opened in XP

that is exactly how it is. you can open 97-2002 version pst in 2003 but not
2003 -2007 version pst.
In any case I think they have corrected the compatibility issue in 2007.

Nope. nothing was 'corrected' in 2007 in this regards. It's the same as in
2003.

How were you attempting to import the pst? What did the error message say?

First thanks to Russ and Diane for your answers!

I have done this test, I have copied my 2003 Outlook .pst file into another
area of my PC and then I have tried to open the PST and it doesnt work
either. So at this stage it looks as though it is not a file compatibility
issue.

My PC came with a 2007 Office trial version that I have uninstalled. But
there are still some legacy files that may be tampering with my licensed 2003
version. I cannot even create a new .PST file. I have repaired and then
reinstalled the 2003 software but it still doesnt work.

When I try to create the new .PST file, I get this error message: An unknown
error ocurred, error code: 0x8007002.

When I click on Data File Management, I get the same error message.

Thank you!!

Monica

I managed to solve the problem by:

1. Manually uninstalling Office 2007 legacy files
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218

2. Removing all Office components from my PC (2003 Web components, Small
Business Components, SQL Server software)

3. Uninstalling 2003

4. Removing the Outlook .PST file so that Outlook creates a new one

5. Installing 2003 again

Now I can open and create .PST files.

Thank you very much to everybody for their help!
