I open documents (html or text) in outlook using word as the editor. Then
using the word insert funtion, I wish to insert a .doc file into the
document. Instead of inserting the new file into the one I am composing, it
attaches it as an outgoing .doc attachment for the email. Has anyone seen
this, and how can I just insert a document into a word composition opened as
the editor to an outlook email.

Are you using the Insert as Text command?

I am not sure what you mean by Text command.....I choose New>Mail message
with MSWORD as my editor. Fom MSWORD I am using the INSERT>file command
that is found at the top of the screen. It does not matter whether the email
is in HTML or Plain Text. This sequence will not insert a file in the body of
the new email.

Look in the lower right corner of the dialog. The Insert button should have an arrow attached to it that will give you access to the Insert as File command.
