Outlook won't open - thousands of messages

T

Tom Edelbrok

We put a rule in one of our users mailboxes that forwards his mail to his
home office. However, his home office mailbox filled up, sending back
'mailbox full' messages to his work account. These in turn got sent back to
the home account, creating an infinite loop.

Now Outlook won't open because there are thousands of messages!

How can we solve this problem? We stopped the Internet Mail connector
service on the EXCH 5.5 server. But we still can't open his mailbox without
a permanent eggtimer. Everyone elses mail is working fine, but of course
with the connector down no one can send or receive internet mail.

All we want to do is delete his 42000 or so messages and get things up and
running.

Any ideas?

Tom

A really long wait should eventually start Outlook. You can also clear the
inbox from within Exchange where you can set options on what to delete as
well. I recommend you do an exmerge first of the mailbox so you can restore
things when you deleted to much. Or do a complete clear of the mailbox
without an exmerge and tell your user he learned soemthing today :-D
(depends on whether you are a BOFH)
