Outlook won't download from pop server, password not accepted

Can someone explain why I get an error message from all of my mail
programs (Outlook XP, Outlook 2003, Outlook Express) when trying to
download mail from Gmail or my university pop server? I get
err-password not accepted.

this happens on two computers, both on XP, though the other had 2000
until I replaced it just now to see if XP would work there.

I called the University they said they've heard of this problem
before. It is common. They can't find a work around. They suggested
I disable norton antivirus, which worked for a day then back to the
error message.

Yup. I get the same thing too using Outlook 2003.
