Outlook will not keep Password

Hello,
I have a new Acer Laptop with Vista Home Premium. I installed Outlook 2003 and have had the usual hanging problems I have read about in this forum. I have noticed that when ever I open Outlook, my password is erased. If I re-enter the password before it attempts to retreive messages, test the settings and close the e-mail accounts settings page, the system seems to run pretty well, most of the time. But why is it dropping the password? I have the "remember passowrd" box checked. Any thoughts?
