Outlook want to close

Bob Cook

Hi All,

I did some clean up work on the computer recently and now Outlook wants to
close all the time. I get the "Microsoft Office Outlook has encountered a
problem and needs to close" message. The report that could be sent to
Microsoft says:

AppName: outlook.exe AppVer: 11.0.8217.0 AppStamp: 480f95d9
ModName: ntdll.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.5512 ModStamp: 4802a12c
fDebug: 0 Offsett: 00036f33

I have run the repair routine but this has not fixed the problem.

If I reinstall Outlook will I lose all my contacts/main etc. and will this
fix the problem

Hoping someone can help

I don't know what you mean by "repair routine" - did you do a repair
install of Outlook? Or Detect and Repair?

You can run a repair install from Add/Remove Programs. Or you can do a
full reinstall of Outlook; both will *not* lose your Outlook data.

However, before you start it will be a good idea to make a backup copy
of all your PST files. Check Control Panel | Mail | Data Files for their
names and locations.

Finally fixed it!

I tried several times to "Repair" the fault using the Control Panel
Add/Remove/Change programs and the Repair process and also by running the
original disk and opting for the Repair option. Both of these methods did
nothing.

I then ran the original disk and went for the Uninstall option. Completely
removed all of Office. Then re-installed Office and all is OK

No data was lost.

Thanks for the help

Blast !!!!

The problem has come back.

Same Error message. When I look at the details to be sent to Microsoft all
is the same except the AppVer and AppStamp numbers (I presume these are
different as this is now a new installation)

Anyone out there can help ?

Does it also happen if you run Outlook in Safe Mode (Start -> Run ->
outlook.exe /safe) ?

Hi Pat,

Thanks for your help with this.

The problem seems to come and go .... very strange.

When I booted the computer just now, there was an update available that was
installed. I noticed that some of the update was for Outlook 2003.

At your suggestion, I've just run Outlook (BTW Outlook 2003) in safe mode
using the command prompt. It performed perfectly!

Any ideas what this means?

Bob

Hi Pat (again),

I have just gone through a process that seems to prove something ......

I ran Outlook in "safe" mode, all OK

I run Outlook normally (ie from the shortcut on the desktop) and the problem
recurred

I then ran Outlook in "safe" mode again and all was OK

Seems that there is a differenec between the two modes.

Hope this helps you .... No idea what this means !

Bob

It probably means you have a misbehaving add-in as Safe Mode loads Outlook
without any add-ins. Check your add-ins, disable them all, then re-enable
them one by one until you find the bad one (closing and restarting Outlook
each time). Then check with that vendor for an update.

Hi Milly,

I did as you suggested.

There were no Add-Ins in the Com Add-Ins area
I disabled both Add-Ins in the Add-In Manger. These were "Exchange
Extensions property pages" and "Fax Server Extensions". Then I re-booted
Outlook. Still the same problem

Hi Bob,

Is there anything else integrated into Outlook, e.g. Antivirus?
If it works fine in Safe Mode, but not in normal mode, then it is
something outside of Outlook that causes the crash. That it crashes in
ntdll.dll is another indication for the same.

Can you go into the Event Viewer and see if there are any additional
information at the time of the last OL crash?

Hi All,

I looked at the Event Log as suggested by Pat and could not really see
anything that made any sense to me.

I'm away on holidays from now until 9 January 2009 so I guess things will
stay as they are till I get back.

Thanks for all your suggestions so far, Happy New Year to you both.

Hi Millie and Pat,

Not really a wonderful result but I fixed the problem.

Eventually, it turned out to be related to Spyware Doctor. The support
people at PC Tools in Sydney were very helpful but we didn’t solve the
problem.

I eventually bought Office Professional 2007 and installed it. This fixed
the problem.

Bob
