Outlook Trying to retrieve data

I keep getting a pop-up stating that Outlook is trying to retrieve data from
the server. This causes Outlook to freeze. Any suggestions?
 
How often do you have send/receive set for? Are you retrieving POP3 email
from an ISP? What version of Outlook are you using?
