Outlook time zones are wrong?

D

Deb RW

This seems too weird to be true, but here goes ... The time zones in Outlook
seem to be incorrect. For instance, it says that if it's 8:00 Pacific time,
it's 7:00 Arizona time. In reality, time zones always move one hour LATER as
you move from West to East. OK, AZ is a little weird because we don't
practice Daylight Savings Time. Still, right now if it's 3pm in CA, it's 4pm
in AZ -- but Outlook says it's 2pm in AZ.

This is all theoretical ... the actual problem is that when I re-installed
Outlook on a new PC, I chose the AZ time zone and all my appointments are an
hour earlier than they're supposed to be. If I set it to Pacific time, my
appointments move to the right time - but I'm not ON Pacific time!

What gives??

Toothsome Papa

sounds like the time zone on the PC where the appontments were made was not
AZ, maybe regular Mountain, so now they are off?

Next time, rather than confusing things with theories, just tell us what
happened...

You created appointments in a different zone from what you are using. You
need to use the time zone mover tool to rebase the appointments -

I played around with the time zone mover a bit. It doesn't matter what
"original" time zone I choose ... if I choose AZ as the current time zone
(the one I want to change to), it says no appointments need changing. So it
seems that Outlook thinks it is now an hour earlier in AZ than it really is.

When I tell it to move the appointments from AZ time to Central time, it
moves them 2 hours earlier - again, this is backwards - as time zones move
West, appointments should move later, not earlier.

When I tell it to move the appointments from AZ time to Alaska time (2 hours
earlier), it says no appointments need to be changed.

I'm completely stymied!

Maybe I should just uninstall and install Outlook again? I had to
copy-and-past the .pst files manually from my old hard drive to my new -
maybe I transferred them incorrectly??

It's been awhile since I used the tool, but I think you want to set the
computer's TZ so the appointment times are correct then run the tool to set
them to AZ.

Uninstalling won't make a difference. If the TZ mover isn't working for you,
set the time zone so the appointments are correct and export to excel or
CSV. Move the appointments to a new calendar folder then fix the time and
import. Once you are sure the appointments are correct, delete the calendar
folder that has the old appointments.

As time zones move west, appointments are earlier - 11 AM in NY is 10 AM in
Chicago, 8 AM in LA. The purpose of the tool is to change the TZ, not the
time. It will move the 11 AM appointment in NY to 11 AM in LA.

I just checked the time zone in my O/S and found the problem. I'm using WIN7,
and the time zone was set to Pacific time. However, when I reset it to AZ
time, the clock on my computer shows the WRONG time - 1 hour later than it
should be. It appears that the O/S thinks AZ moves forward/back one hour in
fall/spring ... but we do not. So this incorrect setting is no doubt messing
up my Outlook settings, since the calendar appts I imported were set in AZ
time.

So, if I want the time on my PC to be right, I have to set it to the Pacific
time zone ... and I'll probably have to reset it twice a year. Is there any
way out of this - any way to correct the time zone settings in WIN7?

How many hours was it off? Right now AZ is one hour behind PT - it's 2PM in
AZ, 1 PM in PT.

That's correct, Diane ... AZ and CA are 1 hour apart right now. In the
summer, AZ and CA share the same time zone because AZ doesn't change zones
twice a year. However, my O/S seems to think that if my regular clock says
4pm, it's actually 5pm in AZ and 4pm in CA.

Is there something wrong with the O/S??

Nothing is wrong with the computer - it’s the time or time zone. Right now,
while CA is on standard time, it is 5PM in AZ and 4 PM in CA. As of tomorrow
at 2AM, they will both be on the same time, although still in different
zones.

If your computer is set to AZ time zone and has the wrong time, you need to
adjust the clock so it’s the correct time.

Once you fix the computer so the time and time zone are correct, are the
appointment times wrong? If so, try the Time Zone mover tool. If it doesn't
help, set the time zone so the appointments are correct and export them to
Excel or CSV format. Fix the computer so the time zone is correct, delete
the old appointments in the calendar, and import the Excel or CSV.
