Outlook sending messages from empty outbox

All of a sudden Outlook says it is sending 1 of 2 messages from an empty
outbox. It seems as though I can't receive incoming messages because Outlook
is stuck in the sending mode. How can I find what Outlook thinks it is
sending so I can delete these messages ?

How does one delete the contents of the outbox if there is nothing which can
be highlighted to delete ?
