Outlook Rules misbehaving

Hi all, Not sure if the rules have gone awry or I'm
misunderstanding their way of working.

I have a 'circulars' folder and a 'junk' folder.

Rule 1 scans for known phrases in the subject/body -
viagra / meds etc and moves to 'junk' if found.

Rule 2 moves all messages sent to my 'circular' addy to
circulars folders (on the understanding that there will be
no offers of manhood extensions in the inbox after rule
one has kicked in).

Problem is, Rule one is copying the message into junk,
then rule 2 is moving the message into circulars, creating
me 2 instances of every mail that meets both criteria, one
in junk and one in circulars.

Now why have a 'move up' and 'move down' option if the
rules aren't sequential, and if they are sequential, why
does rule 2 still find something to run on in the inbox,
when rule 1 should have already moved it?

Any help greatly appreciated though have a feeling I know
the answer...

Is the problem, that I'm only expecting rule 2 to kick in
if the mail is still in the inbox, whereas so long as it
is received through mny circular account it's fair game to
rule 2?

How do I set up a rule to move based on 'content', then
run a second rule to move based on 'addy sent to' on
what's left? Or should I just blow rules out altogether!?

Add "stop processing more rules" to Rule #1.

I have a similar problem. I have 4 rules for specific e-mails to go to 4 specific folders when they arrive in my inbox. Such as if a message is from Jane Smith go to Smith folder OR if a message is from John Doe go to Doe folder. However, the rules are randomly working - sometimes the specified e-mails stay in my inbox instead of going to the Doe or Smith folders.

If I add "stop processing more rules" to each rule as you suggest won't this stop the other rules from working? Or is it acting like an "OR" command?

Any message that comes in will automatically be run past the entire list of
rules that apply to incoming messages. If it meets the criteria for rule
#1, #2, and #3, and none of those rules end in "stop processing more rules",
ALL of those rules will act upon the message in number order -- so the
message may bounce around to several folders, or be duplicated, or whatever.
If you add "stop processing" to rule #1, a message that meets that rule's
criteria will only have that one rule applied to it -- none of the rules
farther down the list will matter.
