OUTLOOK pst file

I loaded OUTLOOK 2003 but had serious difficulties
connecting to my Exchange 5.5 server. During this process
I saved my local emails to a pst just in case I lost
them.

After a number of days trying to get exchange 5.5 to
connect to Outlook 2003 witout success I decided to go
back to Outlook 2002. This was fine but I lost my emails.

OK I thought, I have them all wrapped in the pst file.
Except when I try to open them I cann't as it
complains "is not compatible with this version of the
Personal Folders information service". I have tried to
load OUTLOOK 2003 again but as the information store is
now on the exchange server OUTLOOK will not open, it
needs to see a mail server to load, and will not connect
to our 5.5 server.

Two questions, 1, is there a utility that will enable
Outlook 2002 to open an Outlook 2003 pst file and/or is
there a way to enable Outlook 2003 to open without it
seeing a mail server of any decription

Cheers

Steve

1) No you can't
2) Creating a separate profile without the Exchange account should do

For more information on how you can open you pst-file in previous versions
of Outlook;
http://www.sparnaaij.net/howto/downgradefromoutlook2003.htm

For in case you want to resolve the connection issue;
What Service Pack nummer is on the the Exchange 5.5 server?
How do you connect to the server? In cached Exchange mode or not?
Is the Exchange server on the same subnet and domain as the client?
Does the Exchange server hold more than one networkcard?

Hi Roady

Thanks for your reply.

We are running SP4 on the 5.5 server, I've tried
connecting in cache and direct. The exchange server is on
the same subnet but on a different DNS domain.

When 5.5 was installed we were running a WINS environment
with only a small DNS server for a few UNIX machines.
Since installing AD we have implemented a full AD
integrated DNS domain but the UNIX servers still live on
the old UNIX DNS domain. As the exchange server has been
in for a number of years the guy that installed it added
it to the UNIX domain. It appeared irrelevant as all
clinets resolved via WINS. The AD DNS gets to the UNIX
DNS for UNIX queries via a DNS referral.

With OUTLOOK 2003 (which appears to use DNS etc
differently to OUTLOOK 2002) it always changes the
Exchange server name to show the UNIX DNS fully qualified
name.

I have added the exchange server to the UNIX DNS server
and now it appears to find it OK. But when I connect I
get the message "Unable to open your default e-mail
folders. Create a new profile etc" which I have done and
made it the default but I still get the same message, or
a slightly modified message saying "Unable to open your
default e-mail folders. You must connect to your Exchange
Server computer with teh current profile before you can
synchronise your folders with your offline folder file"
which is hopeless as I can not connect because of the
error. It is just around and around in the same circle

I only want to open OUTLOOK to get to the pst file
(although it would be great to get it working
permanently) and it looks like the only way to open it is
to nominate a server (Exchange, POP3, IMAP, HTTP) and we
only have Exchange.

Any ideas?

It sounds like a DNS problem indeed. You can go for a short term solution by
adding the name and IP-address combination into the HOSTS-file of the
client. For the long term solution you must solve the DNS issue with the
possible help of a DNS newsgroup.

If you create a new mail profile you do not have to supply a valid account
as checking the connection is only optional. Once you've started Outlook
with the new profile you can also remove the account but not letting it
check for new messages should give you an error free workspace as well. Once
you've got Outlook 2003 open you can connect the pst-file by using File->
Open-> Outlook Data File.

Follow the instructions in
http://www.sparnaaij.net/howto/downgradefromoutlook2003.htm to create a
backward compatible pst-file.

Many thanks for your advice. This has largely fixed my
problem. As you suggested, not applying an account to teh
profile meant it didn't try and find the server. It
therefore opened and I could get to my OUTLOOK 2003 pst.
I then found I could save it as an older pst and put that
onto a share and transfer it into my own OUTLOOK 2002
environment. Then I could open it in 2002 and move the
emails into my inbox - success!!

It is strange that I can ping the exchange server in the
UNIX domain but not connect to it. I am les worried about
this as we will soon upgrade to EXCHANGE 2003 and this
will be in the AD domain so the issue should disappear.

MANY many thanks for your help
