Outlook PST File Size

How do you shrink the .pst file? My outlook.pst file was 4 gb. I archived
1.7 gb of messages to seperate archive.pst. My outlook.pst file remain at
4GB although my archive.pst file grew to 1.7GB. I am getting some
performance slowdown on Outlook and have been told that is because my
outlook.pst is very large - but it does not appear to srhrink.; Any
suggestions?
