I am finding that upon quitting Outlook 2003, Outlook fails to end its
process. This is easy to ascertain by looking in the Task Manager.

Is there anything which can be done to ensure that Outlook2003 ends its
process upon quitting of the program?

Hi Donald!

I presume that you have read all of the posts about software that will keep
Outlook running in the background:

1. WinFax is the biggest culprit.
2. Docked PDA.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. AV that scans incoming and/or outgoing email.
5. COM add-ins.
6. Reminder programs that keep a stub of Outlook open to check for new mail
and fire reminders.
7. Cell phones/PDA combination devices set to synch continuously.

There is a little freeware program written by an Outlook Team member here:
http://sunflowerhead.com/software/knockout/

You can use it to quickly shut down Outlook from the system tray icon.

It appears that the culprit was NOD32 Antivirus. It's email scanning doesnt
work well with Outlook it seems.

Changed to Norton AV 2004 and all is now well.

However, I must say that while NOD32 does not work well with Outlook 2003,
at the same time, Outlook 2003 does not work well with NOD32. I proved
this by trying various email programs.

The NOD32 email scanning worked well with both IncredimailXE and "The Bat",
and neither program remained in memory after being shut down after having
incoming or outgoing email scanned.

I also found out through experimentation that Outlook Express also remains
in memory upon shutting down after having incoming or outgoing email scanned
by NOD32.

Too bad. I really liked NOD32, but I must have cooperative programs in my
system. I can't abide programs which cause me extra effort. I especially
don't want to lose the use of Outlook 2003 as my regular email client, since
my Schedule is integrated in the same program.
