Outlook Process Does Not Stop

Major Malfunction

I posted on this previously and thought I'd give an update.

In brief: I am running Outlook 2000 on a Windows 2000 computer w/SP3. Until
recently, about eight weeks ago, everything was fine. Now, if I send e-mail
I still see Outlook in Task Manager Processes even though the application is
gone from my view and the Applications pane in Task Manager. This is
annoying because unless I terminate the process, my computer continues to
receive mail, but without the benefit of filtering.

What I've done so far: I have scanned both computers with several different
virus scanners, virus scanned over the network from another clean machine,
checked the registry manually for any signs of strange entries, scanned both
computers manually and with a search-bot looking for spyware / parasite
programs. All is clean. I have tried Detect and Repair without any change in
activity. So far, no one has contacted me about strange e-mail from my
computers, so I presume nothing is going out, only coming in.

Short of uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook, does anyone have any
suggestions? It's not that I'm opposed to doing that, but I'd like to know
what's going on.

Thanks!

Here are some of the things that will keep Outlook resident.

1) PDA, FAX, .etc software that syncs or uses Outlook data
2) Poorly written third party addins
3) Using Word as your e-mail editor and Word is still running when Outlook
shuts down
4) Antivirus software that protects mail (see #2 because they inject an
addin in Outlook)

This is the most hepful information I've had yet in response to this
problem. As to the checklist:
1) I am using the same PDA synch software that I have been using for the
last three years. Prior to about two months ago, no problem. There is no fax
on my PC.

2) Can you supply a list of known culprits? I don't believe I have any
installed. I take that back. I do have PGP v8.0, but that too has been on
the computer for longer than this problem has existed.

3) I don't use Word for e-mail. The problem I'm experienceing happens even
if Outlook is the sole application running.

4) Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 8.0, the same as I've been using for
the past year. I am expecting 8.1 to be delivered shortly.

For 1 & 2, I've seen WinFax Pro, ActiveSync, and Palm's sync software cause
Outlook to stay resident.

For #4, the LDVP extension can be disabled under Tools | Options | Other |
Advanced Options | Addin Manager
