outlook problem

My outlook email does not open word files. They are transformed to .doc
format for some reason and they do not open at all. PDF opens normally. I
have vista home premium and office 2003 from older computer. Is this familiar
problem to someone else ?

It's probably more familiar to people on this newsgroup:

microsoft.public.outlook.general
 
That might depend on the format the word files are sent in, maybe word 2007
format?
..doc is the default pre 2007 word format
