My Outlook is configured to use Hotmail on my home PC and has been working
fine until recently when it has started to ask for the username and password
for the following server: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.
I type in my username (Email address) and password, (Hotmail password) and
tick the remember my details option but this just starts to loop endlessly. I
have tried re-submitting the details in various formats and I know they are
correct as I can access Hotmail via the web fine. My laptop is not doing this
and connects to homail fine withought any password looping. I have tried
un-installing the hotmail account from outlook and re-installing, checked
details also. I have even un-installed Outlook and re-installed but still no
joy. I am MCP qualified and very familiar with outlook but I am out of ideas
now??

Running IE7? Run Microsoft Update and choose Custom. Here you'll find a HTTP
update you'll need to install.

Do you have any antivirus / firewall enabled. If so try disabling that.
Also try bypassing the router if you do use one.
You shouldn't receive the password prompt in a SAFE mode WITH Networking if
that is the case.

Thanks man, come to think of it, it only started about the time of the IE7
auto update. hmmMMM..

Cheers.

The IE7 HTTP update in the Custom section of Microsoft updates did the trick.
Strange it is not bundled in the automatic updated seing as many people use
this method for Hotmail to Outlook??

Thanks for the help..

Automatic updates are mainly security and high impact updates. This update
doesn't fall within that category as not everybody using Outlook is using it
with Hotmail account and vice versa.

Oops- sorry about that last "blank" post, Rob. I believe I have figured iut
the issue. I have been experiencing the same issue for about 7 months.
Although it did start happening about the same time I installed IE7, I
suspect that has little to do with it. When I went to the foder that stores
my Outlook PST file, I noticed it was protected. If you open Outlook and go
to File>Open>Outlook Data File it will take you into the folder where your
Hotmail data folder resides (The folder should be Outlook). Go "UP" one level
so you can see the folder. Right Click on the folder (Outlook) and then Left
Click on "Properties". I bet you'll see that the folder is marked as "Read
Only", that would mean that Outlook cannot write to the file if /when Outlook
loses track of your password. I moved the entire Outllo folder to My
Documents, Right Clicked, selected properties and removed the "Read Only"
check mark, chose "Apply to All" and the issue seems to be resolved thus far.
Please let me know if it works for you.

PS- to experiment, try the above method on the folder where it resides and
you won't have any more Pop-Ups asking for passwords during that session. I
believe, however that Windows reurns this folder back to the default "Read
Only" mode once Outlook is shut down because of where it resides. You have
more control over changing it permanently if it is moved to another location.

Roady, i have OL 2007 with Vista and i would like to try that update, but i
don't know if it will work for me and i can't find it anywhere. vista will
not allow me to "custom install" updates, it only seems to care about the big
ones. i have to search manually for them from the ms download site and the
search engine doesn't work for that site, i search for IE7 and it says no
results when i can see it right in front of me :-( please let me know if the
http update will help with my password popups and where i can find it, thanks!

1) request for help 1-15-2009 on Outlook
Without my repeating a previous post, I am have the same problem as
previously described almost a year ago (2-20-2007) with Outlook 2007 and my
hotmail acct. --
"Running IE7? Run Microsoft Update and choose Custom. Here you'll find a HTTP
update you'll need to install".

Those directions seem like very little to go on with all the thousands of
posts and the time differential, if it is sufficient, fine, if not please
clue me in on what else I need to know. I have had to use the "Live" version
and I find it less than desirable. I would really appreciate your help.

What exactly is your question?
You cannot find the update or you are still having this issue even after
installing the update?
Are you using the Outlook Connector to connect to your Hotmail?
