not having more severe problems. DISABLE ALL email scanning and try again.

make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions
In the meanwhile, the email scanning features of ALL A/V products WILL, from
time to time, cause problems. This is not an "If", it is a "When".
