Outlook merge to Word Templates

The documents we use to merge from Outlook are set up as templates (.dot).
When I go to merge from Outlook, and select existing document and browse it
defaults to .doc.

Firstly, is there any way to default it to .doc and .dot, instead of having
to manually change it to search for all files *.*?

Secondly, since it is browsing for "Word" documents, is there any reason
that it doesn't include .dot files, and if not shouldn't it?

Thanks
Penny

1) No.

2) Only Microsoft could explain the reasoning behind that aspect of the
feature.

Perhaps you'll want to create a new document with the .dot file and save it
as a .doc document file to streamline the merge process.

Thank you for answering my questions.
