showing up in any of my new accounts, what has to be done for mail from
outlook (old machine) to showup in my now Windows Mail accounts?

Outlook, or Outlook Express? Many people confuse the two, and they aren't
the same.

You'll need to import it. Go to File, Import, Messages, Outlook. You may
have to have Outlook installed to do this.

If you don't want to do that, go back to your old system, set up Outlook
Express to import the Outlook mail and folders. Then, locate the folder
where the DBX files were created. Make that folder available to the Vista
machine, either by copying it to another disk or by sharing it on the
network. Now, in Windows Mail, use File, Import, Messages, Outlook
Express, Import from a Store Folder, and point to where the OE files are.

Hi,

I have a similar problem, and I'm wondering if there's any way to get my
mail from Outlook Express with just the .pst file that I have from the old
machine. It was definitely Outlook Express that I had on the old machine,
and of course the new one came with Windows Mail. I can't install Express on
the new machine because it's got 64-bit encryption. I've already tried
installing Outlook 2007 but no luck in retrieving Express mail. Is there any
hope for me in getting all the mail that was in Express?? Thanks for your
help!

Outlook Express does not use PST files, except when reading them while
importing from Outlook.

It's Outlook that creates and uses PST files.

I think you're confusing terms, but no matter.

Use another machine - borrow an XP system that has Outlook and Outlook
Express. Set up a new Outlook account and import or attach that PST file.
Then, start Outlook Express and use it to import the Outlook account.

Once that is done, go to Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder to see
where the files are kept. Take the *entire folder* over to the Vista
machine, start WM, use File, Import, messages, Outlook Express, Store
Folder. Note that if you've transferred the files via CD, you'll need to
copy it to hard disk as write rights are likely required.

It was on your hard drive. Your "kind" neighbor should have backed things
up first. If you were really using Outlook Express and not Windows mail in
Vista, then my DBXpress program might be able to recover some of the
messages via its extract from disk feature (see www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/),
but if you were using Windows Mail, then they are gone, unless you have a
mail account that leaves the messages on the server.

It was definately outlook express - and the nature of what I had done - was
to slow the 'virtual memory' down - alter the virtual memory - messing where
I should not have been messing - so that it could not start up again - I was
desperate to use internet - to do an online order - so!! - total mayhem!
is it possible to recover stuff even when reformatted?

It isn't likely, but try looking for a folder named Windows.old on your
hard drive.
There are data recovery outfits that specialize in this, but they charge
hundreds of $.
Try pleading with your mail provider. They may have a backup tape.

With my DBXpress program, yes. That is how I tested it. I dumped a bunch
of dbx files on a hard drive partition and then formatted it and ran the
program and recovered 132,000 OE messages.

What you could recover will depend on what disk clusters were overwritten,
and there is no way of knowing that without running the program.

DBXpress (www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/) will recover OE messages from formatted
hard drives and its only $ 26.95.
