Outlook lost all my files

I go to Tools and Email accounts and select add email account. I enter all
the same information I had before and run a test. Both the pop test and smtp
test come back with the following message:

Sent test e-mail message: The specified server was found, but there was no
response from the server. Please verify that the port and SSL information is
correct. To access these settings close this dialog, then click More
Settings and click on Advanced.

I go to the advanced section but don't know enough about the default numbers
to tell if they are correct. I also don't have a send/receive button on
Outlook which I understand means there isn't an email account internally.

When I got to Outlook address book it told me there already was one. All my
address are saved in a file so I just need to get them from that to the book

Time to talk to your ISP. You might also want to enable diagnostic logging
(http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300479) and post the results.

Your ISP can tell you.

Correct.

"Go to Outlook address book" where?

that to the book

What file? How did you save them? In what format are they stored inside
this file? Why did you not simply reuse your existing PST, which already
contains all yoru contacts?

My ISP got the email part figured out.

I am still not sure about the address book. When I hit the address book
icon there are no names in the file. A search of "address book brings up
three entries" One is the MS icon and the other two are from the new profile
I created. Neither of the latter has any names in it. A search of *.pst
brings up no files.

I routinely copy the address book and put it in my briefcase in case of
things like this. It is little out of date but would work if I could just
transfer them to the new address book.

thanks, Skip

By default on Windows 2000/XP systems, PSTs are created in the (usually
hidden) folder
%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. Open
Windows Explorer and enter this string into the Address fiel, then click Go.

Once last time, you can't "copy the address book" in Outlook because IT'S
NOT A FILE. It's just an interface into your Contacts folder.

Thanks Brian, I couldn't figure out how to put the stirng you gave me into
Windows Explorer so I just studied up how to restore the address book and
collected it from the briefcase as an import. That worked fine. Again, many
thanks for your help. These things get away from me sometimes. I'll be
posting about the problem that caused this in the first place as soon as I
research the question.

In Windows Explorer, right-click the toolbar and choose "Address Bar" to see
the Address field.
