outlook is slow to open word and excel files

I am running XP SP2 and Office 2003. Recently my ability to open word and
excel files from email attachemtns has slowed to 1-2 minutes or more to open
the atts. .pdf files open fine and opening word or excel files from explorer
oy my docs is not problem. Any ideas on what might be happening. I've
compacted .pst files, dumped temp files, and defraged the disc, and still the
same

Do you have any disconnected network drives showing in My Computer? If yes, try unmapping them.

Most likely you have a virus scanner that integrates with Office
applications and checks Office documents upon opening but not pdf-file.
Simply disable the Office integration as it doesn't add an extra layer of
security anyway.

I checked for the virus scanning and that didn't seem to make a difference.
It takes about 3 minutes for an excel, word, or powerpoint to open from an
attachment, but a pdf in adobe reader is less than 15 seconds. Any
suggestions?
