Outlook hangs during start-up

I'm running Outlook 2002 over Windows XP Professional on
a Motion Computing M1200 tablet PC. Outlook hangs up
during opening it from either the desktop icon or the
Start menu. I have it configured to open with My Outlook
Today. It seems to open cleanly until the point at which
it loads the data (calendar items, tasks, e-mail), then
it hangs up. I've ended it using the Task Manager. On
the next attempt, it asked if I wanted to open in safe
mode. But, it hanged again. I can't use the "Detect &
Repair" function because it hangs before I can access the
menu items within Outlook. Any suggestions on how to
repair (without losing my data) would be most appreciated!

First copy your *.pst file to a save location. Now you are certain you've
got a good back-up.

Since Outlook freezes before it is fully started even in safe mode it is a
good time to delete your mail-profile settings (just settings, no data). You
can do this in your configuration screen by opening Mail and then press the
button "Show Profiles". Delete the profile and recreate the settings for
your e-mailaccount. If Outlook succesfully starts you can import the *.pst
file again. If importing doesn't work you might want to run scanpst.exe on
the pst-file. If Outlook still freezes after recreating the profile you
probably need to re-install Outlook.

Good Luck!
