outlook goes in non response mode

Outlook keeps going in non response mode for 15 to 20 seconds and then comes
back. What can I do to prevent. Very annoying.
When this occur it also impacts any other micrtosoft applications I may be
running. such as word, excel etc..
I have 2 G of Ram and my .PST is only at 2.9G
My anti virus is Eset, NOD 32
