I have recently been unable to access links in my emails, for example: an
email from an electrical store and I want to find out more about the item
advertised nothing happens if I click on the 'For more information...' I can
right click and save as a target and access the information that way, but it
is so long winded, I would love to have things back to normal.

1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

2... You need to be sure your system is clean from malwares and Viruses by
scanning for them.

Open a run command and type in:
regsvr32 urlmon.dll click [OK]
netsh winsock reset Click [OK]
Reboot your Computer and try the links.

Do you have any third-party toolbar installed?.

I have tried everything you have suggested all to no avail. I have a google

if its the typical error then
it's a matter of registering the internet shortcut file type.

open my computer > tools > folder options > file types > look for internet shortcut with (none) as the extension.

click advanced and make sure you have
an action called open. If not then create
it. In either case make sure that the below
settings are edited into the action:

action: Open

application used to perform action: rundll32.exe ieframe.dll,OpenURL %l

use dde = checked

application: ieframe

dde application..: (leave blank)

topic: system

click ok and exit dialogs...

try shortcuts again.

[in some cases where memory is low
ie needs to be prestarted before clicking
links..]

I looked at this and unfortunately with my confidence and understanding of
the computer I didn't dare to try too much, nor did I understand some of it,
so I'm no further forward...unless you have any simpler instructions. Thanks
for the try.

I followed this as far as - action: Open. then I don't understand the rest of
it I'm afraid. I still can't open links. I've noticed if I hover over some of
the links it says for example -
'Blocked::http//www.moneysavingexpert.com'...etc. etc

ok,

when you get to the dialog window
notated as open there will be fields
in it.

the lines i provided should reflect
the lines you should have as well.

if you have blanks in those fields
then copy the data i provided and
located right after the colons and
paste it into the appropriate spaces
inside yours.

once the settings match click ok
then look for another file type
called URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol

the information for this extension
is notated below and the above method
are the same as before:
open my computer > tools > folder options > file types > look for URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol

click advanced and make sure you have
an action called open. If not then create
it. In either case make sure that the below
settings are edited into the action:

action: Open

application used to perform action: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

use dde = checked

dde message: "%1",,-1,0,,,,

application..: IExplore

dde application not..: (leave blank)

topic: WWW_OpenURL

click ok and exit dialogs...

try shortcuts again.

Uninstall Goolge Toolbar and Reboot the machine and see if that will help.
Let us know.
