outlook express works but outlook doesn't

I can get outlook express to send and receive e-mails but my outlook 2003
with the same e-mail settings won't send or receive. It passes the settings
tests (logs into the pop3 and smtp servers) but when I go to write an e-mail
the e-mail just sits in the outbox. I have windows xp home. Outlook express
does everything just fine. Any suggestions. . .

Let me know if you get an answer. I have a similar problem, will send but
won't receive.

Last night I got things to work by adding outlook.exe to the firewall
exceptions. I'd seen this mentioned elsewhere. Apparently it allows the
test mail through but not the other e-mails you try to send. After adding
outlook to the firewall exceptions I had outlook do a repair (I think under
tools) and then re-setup the account and it is all working now. . .

It looks like Outlook uses the system account or some other account rather
than the logged in user. I have a firewall that check authentication and
unless I allowed all users access to the POP and SMTP protocol ports, it
would not work, but express did work.

In short, check your firewall, make sure all users have access to the POP
and SMTP protocol ports.

Perhaps an MS techniccian can shed some further light to this problem????
I'd hate to leave these ports open on my firewall.
