Outlook Express Virus/Trojan?

Hi folks,
I have a problem.
The news part of my outlook express freezes when I click on the newsgroup
title (the tree)
Initially, I couldn't connect to MS news server, as I initially created MS
news server as
"Microsoft News", and I can connect here because I can generate another
instance of MS News server as news.microsoft.com (the parent of the tree)
otherwise, I won't be able to connect.
Now my local news server stops responding. I wonder if it is a
super-virus/trojan that can bypass my virus checker and spyware checker...
Any ideas?
Thanks
Jack

How large is the newsgroup folder? Have you tried compacting?

In Outlook Express place the cursor on Local Folders and select File,
Work Offline followed by File, Folder, Compact All. Do not attempt to
interupt or stop the process until it has completed. When it has
completed close and reopen Outlook Express and see if the offending
folders will open.

Hope this helps.

might be that you are
downloading the entire
newserver postings and
your system freezes.

you should only download
2 or three days worth of
postings, delete the rest
and flag all those you
want to retain.

Crossposted to OE General.

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File >
Identities > Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all
folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into
the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File > Identities > Manage
Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Why ask HERE? Do you see OE included in this group's title? NO.

Ask elsewhere

Why bother changing your name? You are still of No Consequence and your
comments like the above are unwelcome.

Maybe because I felt like it, like this poster felt like just asking
wherever they wanted, or you feel the need to try and control others?

perhaps you should
take a spice break.
