Outlook express removes access to wanted attatchments

For some reason, outlook express is not allowing me to
open attatchments included with mail. When i click on the
paperclip icon, the file name is grayed out and i cannot
access it. These are files from reliable sources and i
doubt if they contain anything malicious. Is there some
security setting i might be able to change to open these?
