Hi Group this is my first post so I hope the protocol is correct.
I am using XP professional, Outlook Express 6
I opened Outlook Express recently and noted that there were no messages in
my Sent folder, (there should be 1000 at least), the same also applies to
another folder.
I reverted to yesterday and the day before to try and recover them, but to
no avail.
I'm pretty sure that I didn't delete them, but it could have been my
daughter who used my computer last night.
Has anyone any ideas how this happened, and whether or not the files can be
recovered.
I would be very grateful for any advice offered.

What Wes and Anando said.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Just a belated note to thank those who answered my question with some useful
information.
I followed up the information but it looks as though I have personally
irretrievably lost the files concerned.
The most likely cause of the loss was too much information stored in the
files,
I estimate I may have had about 3,000 plus emails in each.
If anyone knows how to archive, say anything over 3 months old, I would be
pleased to hear from you.
