I turned on my Outlook Express this morning and the history
disappeared. I had new messages but the old ones are gone
Where did they go and can I get them back

Start here: http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/problems/bugs.htm#mailgone.

DBXtract
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx

DBXtend (faster and more options)
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtend/Default.aspx

I would close OE and then move all DBX files in your Identity's store
(http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/store.htm#storemain) to another
Windows (not OE) folder and run DBXtract/DBXtend on them.

If either application successfully recovers any messages, count yourself
fortunate. Recovered messages may be dragged into an open OE folder, but...

Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose. Disable Background Compacting and
frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

Also disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and may have played a role in your problem (especially
if it's a McAfee product).
