Outlook Express Connection Problem

Recently we linked a router into our home network..a linksys W54g..which is a
wireless broadband system. All works pretty well except that our outlook
express connection has become somewhat erratic.

When you initially turn the computer on it works fine and a restart of the
machine also will bring it back to life but if the computer has been going
for some time and you then go to outlook express to check e-mails, we find it
will not connect and produces an error message. To get it going, a restart it
seems is required.

The error message produced is this: "Connection to the server has failed."
The accounts are then named as follows..Account- POP 3, name, Server- POP3,
Name, Protocol, Port 110, Secure (SSL): Then "socket error No. 10061, error
number 0x800CCCOE."

All connections seem to be ok so what could be causing this to happen and
what needs to done to prevent this occurring?

Many Thanks

Paul.

Thank you for the rapid reply. Unfortunately, no luck. I disabled the Norton
Antivirus and also disabled the windows xp firewall, but the inabililty to
connect together with that error message remains. I am not sure exactly how
to check those ports on the windows firewall but I would think disabling both
would be a good check. So, there must be something more to it.

Thank you..I am not that much of a computer whizz, so would you mind outling
how to do this and perhaps the reasons for doing so. I do appreciate your
time, so many thanks for the asssistance.!!

Hi Paul,
Let's be clear about these options then we can find a solution:

OLEXP: Error Message: The Connection to the Server Has Failed...Error
0x800CCC0E
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302339

How to troubleshoot error messages that you receive when try to send and
receive e-mail in Outlook and in Outlook Express
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813514
OLEXP: Unable to send or receive messages with Dr. Solomon's NetGuard
installed
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/195458
You receive a "Socket error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800ccc0e" error message
when you try to send or receive e-mail in Outlook or in Outlook Express
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/191687/

Another to try is while on Outlook Express:
Click Tools >> Options >. Click on Connections Tab and make sure these
settings correct:
Dial-Up
[ ] Ask before switching dial-up connections

Click on Settings for the connection and make sure the correct connection
(Default ) is selected .

again Click Tools >> Accounts >> Click on Servers Tab and make sure this
option not selected:
[ ] log on using Secure Password Authentication.

Click on Connection Tab and check this check box:
[ ] Always connect to this account using:
[ Local Area Network ][v]

Click [OK] to close and open a Run Command and type these command:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]
netsh winsock reset click [OK]
Reboot your machine and see.
How the Power saving Option on this machine set to and does the Dial on
Demand on the Router option checked or not, best if uncheck it.

I will make sure this machine is clean from Viruses by scanning from
another vendor to get another opinion.

Thank you again for your assistance. I have followed the steps suggested. The
actual problem is You receive a "Socket error: 10061, Error Number:
0x800ccc0e" error message when you try to send or receive e-mail in Outlook
or in Outlook Express.

The only step I cannot find is the Alwyas connect to this acct using the
LAN..it doesn't seem to be listed.

However I have also run through those 'cmd' instructions you provided and
that seems so far to have been successful. Since doing that, I have not seen
the error reappear so fingers crossed.

When I typed in netsh windsock reset though, it came back with the message
"the following cmd was not found".

The problem seems to stem from in basic terms as I see it with some sort of
inability to connect via ports 25 and 110 whatever that may mean. Someone
else suggested typing in cmd, netstat -an and checking as to whether those
two ports were open. When I did that they did not appear, however after your
suggestions, as mentioned it seems now to be working although there is still
no reference under TCP to a port 25 or 110.

Have just had a look at outlook express and the problem is still there.
Interesting though as I have an account and my wife has hers. The email on my
side functioned perfectly well but when I switched users to her side and
brought up outlook, the connection error was there on hers. Switched back to
my side and it worked ok.

Thanks Nass,

I have been away for a bit but I note the problem still remains whereby I am
able to log onto and receive e-mails but my wife cannot as that error message
keeps cropping up. The system we use is indeed outlook express, not outlook.

I also tried to go through the Damaged user profile however when I click
control panel, system and eventually user profiles, I note that the 'copy to'
box for both my wife and for myself is not highlighted..inoperative.

A strange thing as a while ago our e-mail system worked just fine. It would
be great though to solve the problem!! Beyond me unless someone has the
reason.

Hi Ed, Here's the fix for this problem.
put your xp installation cd into your cdrom drive.
when the cd loads, click on "Install Optional Windows Componants".
a dialog "menu" will open, scroll to "Outlook Express".
UNCHECK "outlook express", allowing it to be removed. When this is complete,
scroll to "Outlook Express" AGAIN, this time, CHECK "outlook express",
allowing it to install.
tip: make sure outlook express is "closed" when doing this. Also, all of
your mail and address book (wab) is safe, you won't lose anything following
this FIX.

Sincerely,
Mike McArdle, MCP, MCDST, SERVER+, SECURITY+, NETWORK+, A+. MCSE BOUND!
