I have xp outlook express and I have just noticed that my incoming e-mail
with attachments no longer have a paper clip on the right side. Why is this
because I have actually missed reading some. It is only when I double click
or right click and open with my mouse that I know there is an attachment
there. Why has it changed?Thanks

There is a setting in Outlook Express that controls this. You need to
untick the "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could
potentially be a virus" from the Security Tab in Tools > Options

Thanks Sarah, but this is not the problem.. I can open my attachments, it is
the paper clip notifying me that I have an attachment that has
disappeared. How can I get it back?

Is your email set to only download headers until you open
(double click) the email header. Until the email is
downloaded, it doesn't know there is an attachment.
In Internet Explorer/Tools/Options/Read have you unchecked
the box that says automatically download messages when in
the preview pane?

Do you still have the Preview pane header?
View, Layout, check Show Preview pane header.

Do you have a paperclip in the column headers?
View, Columns, check Attachments.

First, save the attachment to your hard drive rather than try to open it
from the email program. Then if you double-click it and still get that
error, it means that Windows doesn't know which installed program
should open that type of file. If you know (or have a preference), use
the Open With to navigate to the program's executable. If you want more
focused help, tell us the filename and extension you are trying to open
and what program with which you want to open it. In order to see the
extension, go to Folder Options>View and uncheck "Hide extensions for
known file types".
