Outlook Express 6 DELETE function not working

My Outlook Express v 6 suddenly lost its "DELETE" function. I am unable to
delete any messages - not by (a) highlighting the msg & clicking "Delete";
nor by (b) highlighting the message and pressing CTRL-D.

ALSO, I cannot empty the "Deleted" folder contents by right-click>delete all
messages.

I have re-booted the computer TWICE, but the problem persists.

Any help on how to fix the problem willl be appreciated.
