Outlook error 5.5.0 and Charter.net clients

Starting just recently I receive the following failure message for all emails
ending in 'charter.net, only when I send from Outlook; OK if using Webmail
Hotmail or Outlook Express.

Diagnostic-Code: smtp;501 Syntax error in parameters or arguments

I am having the same problem - and can find no reason for it or a
solution.
